Nitish Kumar leads Bihar to form human chain against dowry, Opposition boycotts

Patna, Jan 21 (TheBiharPost/IBNS): Thousands of people came out on the streets on Sunday, holding each other’s hands to form a human chain, against dowry and child marriages.

The participants included schoolchildren, college students, teachers, leaders, officials and common men.

According to authorities, the chain stretched for 13,660 km across all 38 districts of Bihar during which the people stood in queue for some 30 minutes to show their solidarity against the twin social evils.

Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar led the main event at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan. He was joined by many cabinet colleagues and assembly Speaker.

“There are already laws to tackle these two social evils in the country yet they continue and the purpose here is to create awareness among the masses,” Kumar told the media.

The programme, however, lost much of its sheen as two main Opposition parties, the RJD and the Congress, boycotted the event.

Last time, both the parties who were part of the ruling Grand Alliance had joined another such human chain against alcoholism.
