Nagaland: 4 people excommunicated from their village for 30 years for not voting candidate supported by Village Council
Kohima, Mar 7 (IBNS) : A shocking incident has came to light in Nagaland, where four persons including three women were allegedly excommunicated from their village for 30 years after the villagers suspected they did not voted for candidate supported by the Village Council.
The shocking incident happened at Changki village under Jangpetkong assembly constituency in Nagaland’s Mokokchung district.
According to the report, among the persons, one 58-year-old woman was allegedly brutally beaten up by some villagers on Mar 5 night and excommunicated from the village.
Apart from the woman, three other persons, including two women, were also excommunicated from the village for 30 years for the same reason.
The woman reportedly sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to Dimapur for treatment.
Following the shameful incident, the Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung district has been issued a show cause notice.
“This shameful act conducted in the village is a mockery of free and fair elections mandated by the Election Commission of India and a blatant violation of the office letter no CON/EL/2018/68, dated 15/2/2018 pertaining to the role of the Village Council during elections. It is clearly stated under Section 15(1) of the Village Council act, 1978 that Village Council shall be auxiliary to the district administration and have the powers to deal with maintenance of law and order and also to enforce orders passed by the competent authority on the village as a whole inter-alia other things,” Sachin Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Mokochung district said in the show cause notice.
The Mokokchung district Deputy Commissioner also said that the incident raises serious question over the functioning and efficiency of the Changki Village Council as per the mandate of the Village Council act.
According to the reports, the Village Council Members had kept a strict vigil over all three polling stations at Changki village during the assembly polls held on Feb 27.
This is not the first such incident as a woman was beaten up in Nagaland during elections period.
Few women were allegedly beaten up at Merangkong village under Tuli assembly constituency in Mokokchung district for supporting a candidate not chosen by the Village Council.
In last year, TR Zeliang was forced to step down following massive violence after Zeliang-led government tried to advocate 33 percent reservation for women in urban body polls.
