Modi attacks Sharad Pawar, spares Shiv Sena in poll rally

Sangli, Maharashtra, Oct 5 (IBNS): Continuing his campaign in poll-bound Maharashtra, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attacked Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar on the issue of farmers' suicide while choosing to not target the Shiv Sena, its former alliance partner with whom his party failed to forge a tie-up this time.

"In 5 years so many farmers have committed suicide," said Modi at a rally here, as he questioned former Agriculture Minister  Sharad Pawar pointing out that he failed to act in his tenure for the people.

He said while Pawar was the Agriculture Minister  over 3000 farmers have committed suicide almost every year. He said even in the tenure of Pawar the Narmada project was stalled.

"The Government stalled Narmada project for years...a Congress government in Delhi, which even Sharad Pawar was a part of," said Modi.

He said BJP had never won Sangli Lok Sabha since Independence as he urged urged people to make BJP win.

"And you gave me much more than I asked for. I have a special connection with this land. Vakil Saheb, on whom I wrote a book hails from here only, said Modi at Tasgaon

He said these are the first polls to take place in absence of Bal Sahab Thackeray ji. He said he will not utter a word against the late leader as a mark of his respect to him.

"He was the man who stood for the rights of people," said Modi.

He slammed some newspapers for publishing that Modi has criticized Shiv Sena in his speeches.

Urging people to reject politicians who looted Maharashtra, Modi said never let a coalition government rule the state.

He said he felt sad things being  said in the name of Shivaji Maharaj as he referred to some utterances of Sharad Pawar as painful.

He said India is ready to move ahead. "The nation won't stop. I tell people here- bid farewell to those who looted so much," said Modi.

"We want to work for the farmers, for the villages and for Maharashtra. Here industry and jobs are also needed," he said.

"We are not like the Congress. We don't run away. We will tell you what we do for you," he said.

He said Gujarat is the younger brother of Maharashtra and the two states are closely related.
