Srinagar, July 20 (IBNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has congratulated Ram Nath Kovind on his becoming the 14th President of India.

“The victory marks an important milestone in the political history of the country and it reflects the empowerment of underprivileged, backward, minorities and other weaker sections of the society,” Mehbooba said in a statement issued here in Srinagar .

Mehbooba hoped the tenure of Kovind would prove to be inspiring, encouraging and egalitarian.

NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday became the 14th President of India beating his opponent Meira Kumar predictably, polling over 7 lakh votes.

Succeeding Pranab Mukherjee, Kovind became second Dalit President of India after KR Naryanan.

He won two thirds of the votes almost. His name was declared by the returning office.
