Madison/New Delhi, Feb 12 (IBNS): The Indian government on Thursday said it is providing all consular assistance to an Indian national who was left paralysed after being allegedly thrashed by the police in the US.

" Consulate General in Atlanta in touch with Madison police chief & providing all necessary consular assistance," MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.

"Took up issue with US Embassy in Delhi & local police chief , expressed serious concern & deputed consular official to assist," he said.

According to reports, the victim,  57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel , has been hospitalized with fused vertebrae.

The police thrashed Patel last week when he was walking on the sidewalk outside his son's home in Alabama, local media reports said.

He was just walking on the sidewalk as he does all the time,"  his son Chirag Patel was quoted as saying by al.com.

The  Madison Police has suspended the officer.

The police have started investigating the issue.

Chirag Patel told al.com that his father came to the US to help his wife take care for their new baby so that he could pursue his masters degree in electrical engineering at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

"This is a good neighborhood. I didn't expect anything to happen," Chirag Patel told the website.
