Kolkata, Mar 8 (IBNS): Tension erupted in southern Kolkata's Jadavpur area as activists of CPI-M's students wing, Students Federation of India (SFI) and a Hindutva outfit, Bangali Hindu Astitva Raksha Manch, got engaged in a clash with each other on Thursday evening, reports said.

According to reports, activists of the religious group gathered near Jadavpur 8B bus stand to stage protest against the vandalism of  a statue of Bharatiya Janata Party's predecessor organization Bharatiya Jana Sangh's founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in city's Kalighat area.

Minutes before the programme was scheduled to start, SFI members reached the spot and allegedly beaten up the activists of the religious outfit in presence of police.

CPI-M leader Satarup Ghosh, who was present there during the incident, told IBNS, "We had inputs that a right wing activists would try to destroy Lenin statue at Jadavpur 8B today to take revenge for Shyama Prasad Mukherjee's statue vandalism."

"We never support attacks on statues. Today we came here just to save Lenin's statue from the right wing activists," Ghosh added.

The incident triggered tension at the area.

Later, a heavy police force rushed to the scene and security personnel evacuated the Hindutva group members from the area to bring situation under control.

A local police official told IBNS, "Situation is under control now and we've deployed a huge force to avoid untoward incident further."

"Two members of the religious group have been held for inciting the violence," the official added.

BJP West Bengal president Dilip Ghosh condemned the alleged attack of Left students' union on the Hindutva group.
