Kidnapped Sarpanch's body found in Sopore

Sopore, Dec 13 (IBNS): The body of a village council head (sarpanch) who was kidnapped by suspected militants in Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district was found on Saturday morning, media reports said.

62-year-old Ghulam Mohammad Mir was kidnapped by multiple gunmen who barged into his house of in Tarazoo village on Friday evening. The kidnapping came three days after Assembly elections in Sopore as part of the third phase of polling in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sopore saw a turnout of 30 percent, 10 percent higher than the 2008 assembly elections.

Sources said that security agencies believe Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Hizbul Mujahideen militants operating in the area may be responsible for the kidnapping.

Security forces and police also launched a search drive soon after the family lodged a police complaint but could not find the kidnappers.
