Kerala CM urges Centre to not sign RCEP Agreement

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 14 (UNI) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday urged the Centre to desist from its plans to sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement.

In a Facebook post, the Chief Minister cautioned that the RCEP agreement would adversely affect the country’s agriculture and industrial sectors.

The implementation of the agreement would badly affect the agriculture sector which was the backbone of the economy of Kerala, he said.

Urging the Centre to convene a meeting of political parties to discuss the agreement in detail, he further said the people in the country were not aware of the terms and conditions of the trade agreement.

He also urged various farmers organisations to stage protest against the Centre's anti-farmer policies affecting the agricultural, dairy and fisheries sector.

The RCEP was a trade agreement between members of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) and some other countries including India.
