Kavach 4.0 launched on Vadodara–Ahmedabad route: Rail travel gets a high-tech safety upgrade
As part of the ongoing expansion of the Kavach safety system, Indian Railways has commissioned Kavach 4.0 on Gujarat’s first Bajwa (Vadodara)–Ahmedabad section, covering a stretch of 96 km.
The project spans 17 stations and includes extensive safety infrastructure, comprising 23 communication towers, 20 Kavach buildings or huts, 192 km of optical fibre cable, and the installation of 2,872 RFID tags along the route.
The first Kavach-enabled train to operate on this section was the Sankalp Fast Passenger (59549/59550), which ran with WAP-7 locomotives and 11 LHB coaches.
Kavach 4.0 is now fully operational on the corridor and is designed to automatically mitigate safety risks by preventing incidents arising from Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD). The system enforces automatic speed control, including supervision of sectional speeds, loop lines and permanent speed restrictions, while also providing protection against head-on and rear-end collisions. Additional safety features include an SOS facility and automatic whistling at level crossing gates.
So far, Kavach has been implemented across more than 2,200 route kilometres on the Indian Railways network.
Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system of Indian Railways, aimed at delivering the highest levels of operational safety. It is a highly technology-intensive system certified to Safety Integrity Level–4 (SIL-4)—one of the highest safety standards in railway signalling—underscoring Indian Railways’ commitment to world-class safety and reliability.
The system assists loco pilots by automatically applying brakes when prescribed speed limits are exceeded or when safety is compromised, thereby preventing accidents and enhancing safe train operations, including during adverse weather conditions.
Continuous improvements based on operational experience and independent safety assessments led to the approval of Kavach Version 4.0 by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). The latest version marks a significant milestone in railway safety and is tailored to meet the demands of India’s diverse and high-density rail network.
Key technological upgrades in Kavach 4.0 include:
Improved location accuracy for precise train positioning
Enhanced signal aspect information in large and complex station yards
Station-to-station Kavach interface through optical fibre cable for faster and more reliable communication
Direct integration with existing electronic interlocking systems for seamless coordination with current signalling infrastructure
These enhancements make Kavach 4.0 more robust, responsive and suitable for large-scale deployment. The system has also been certified to meet global safety standards by an Independent Safety Assessor (ISA).
The commissioning of Kavach 4.0 on Gujarat’s Bajwa (Vadodara)–Ahmedabad section reinforces Indian Railways’ sustained focus on deploying indigenous safety technologies, strengthening passenger safety, improving operational reliability, and advancing the vision of a safer and smarter national rail network.
