Jallikattu of Tamil Nadu continues in grand manner, political parties and government in support

Mumbai, Jan 16 (IBNS): The state government in Tamil Nadu seems in favour of holding the traditional bull taming festival or Jallikattu, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Although, on Monday, a 19-year-old spectator was gored to death at Madurai, Chief Minister E Palaniswami and his deputy O Panneerselvam were seen attending an event that offered brand new cars as gifts for the best performers, media reports said on Tuesday.

Two gleaming cars splashed with stickers of the ruling AIADMK and former chief minister J Jayalalithaa were displayed on a platform near the Jallikattu arena, which was crammed with scores of AIADMK leaders, reported NDTV.

Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar was seen handing out gold coins to the winners, reports said.

The Supreme Court banned Jallikattu in 2014 after activists said it constituted extreme animal cruelty.

Last year, after massive protests, Tamil Nadu enacted a law to bypass the top court's verdict.

It is a traditional sport that involves taming a bull. The bull is released into a crowd of people and the participants try to hold on to its hump or horns.

The event is celebrated on Mattu Pongal, which is the third day of the popular harvest festival.
