Chennai, June 30 (IBNS) Tamil Nadu CM and AIADMK supremo J Jayalaithaa returned strongly to the political scenario of the state as she won the RK Nagar assembly by-election by a massive margin on Tuesday.

She defeated CPI candidate C.Mahendran by a huge margin of  1.51 lakhs votes, reports said.

The election assumed significance as Jayalalithaa eyed a return to the state assembly after overcoming a court conviction in disproportionate assets case.

Jayalalithaa secured 1.6 lakh votes while Mahendran  got  9,690 votes.

She had returned to the top post on May 23 after being acquitted in a disproportionate assets case by the Karnataka high court.

She had been convicted in the case in September last by a trial court in Bangalore.

She had to fulfill the constitutional requirement of getting elected as MLA within six months of becoming the chief minister.
