Heavy shower with windstorm hits Kolkata, more rainfall likely in next 48 hours

Kolkata, Aug 17 (IBNS): A heavy downpour with windstorm, having a speed of 40-50 kmph, lashed Kolkata and its outskirts on Wednesday evening.
Several other districts of West Bengal are also receiving the shower due to a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal, IMD officials said.

"The depression over the Bay of Bengal has turned into a deep depression and is slowly moving towards Jharkhand. Its current location is very close to West Bengal's Digha coast and it's footing towards North-West," a senior official of IMD's Kolkata Regional Centre told IBNS.

According to IMD, as the depression will reach Jharkhand in 24-48 hours, it could occur heavy to very heavy rainfall in Jharkhand's Damodar valley region.

"Kolkata would receive moderate to heavy rain in next 48 hours, while several other districts of West Bengal, including Howrah, Burdwan, Birbhum, Purulia, Bankura, and the coastal areas of East Midanipur and South 24 Parganas, would be lashed by heavy to very heavy showers," the official said.

Meanwhile, several areas of Kolkata have been waterlogged due to the evening-shower and traffic in the city has been partly disrupted.

Till the latest update came in, traffic movement has been completely stopped as at least 40 trees fell down on the roads due to the windstorm.

"Due to uprooted trees at different places in Kolkata several roads are closed. We are trying our best to restore the situation as soon as possible," one senior official of Kolkata Traffic Police told IBNS.

A man was killed and at least 6 others were injured in south Kolkata's Jadavpur area, when a tree fell on them.

Train service in several sections of Eastern and South Easter railways from Howrah and Sealdah have been partly disrupted as trees uprooted on overhead wires.

"As trees uprooted on overhead lines at few locations, train service has been partly hit and our quick response team reach the spots. Service will be restored very soon," Eastern Railway's CPRO Ravi Mahapatra told IBNS.
