Mumbai, Sep 7 (IBNS): A police man in Maharashtra's Kalyan was allegedly attacked and his head puhsed under water during the Ganesh festival immersion ceremony, according to media reports on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the policeman, Nitin Dogade, apparently used his baton to discipline a few unruly volunteers in the crowd.

According to local news sources, the volunteers also attacked the policeman when he managed to free himself from the volunteer's clutches who was trying to drown him and came up.

A video of the incident surfaced on social media.

An attempt to murder case has been registered but no one arrested so far, the media reported

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray and a delegation of wives of police personnel met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday regarding attacks on policemen in Maharashtra.

Later the Chief Minister's office tweeted, "State is working for a plan to increase interaction between police and public. Also working for skill development program for police wives:CM."

Maharashtra has witnessed a spurt in attacks on the police in recent times.

In August, traffic constable Vilas Shinde died in hospital from head injures after he was brutally thrashed, allegedly by an unruly biker who was told off for not wearing a helmet, according to media reports.

In February, a mob attacked policemen in Latur while a Sena activist from Thane was arrested for allegedly thrashing a woman traffic constable after she stopped him for talking on the phone while driving his SUV, reported NDTV.
