Four die in Meerut mall demolition drive

Meerut, Jul 9 (IBNS): Police fear more people may be trapped under the debris of the mall in Meerut as rescue operations continued on Saturday, according to media reports.

Four people, who were inside the building during the demolition, died after they were buried under the falling debris. Three people, who were injured, have been removed to hospitals.

The Meerut Cantonment Board had ordered the demolition of the multi-storied building during an anti-encroachment drive, media reported.

Families of those dead alleged that the four people were sleeping inside the building when the bulldozers razed it without prior information. They have also registered a police complaint.

However, the Meerut Cantonment Board has said that it had sent a prior notice to the occupants to vacate the premises as demolition would begin early on Saturday.
