‘Face-offs still continue’: ITBP chief reveals fresh India-China border tensions in Arunachal

New Delhi/IBNS: Face-offs with Chinese troops have occurred at multiple locations along the Arunachal Pradesh border in recent days and continue to persist, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) Director General Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor said on Thursday, according to media reports.

"In the past few days, a situation arose where face-offs happened at several locations in Arunachal and it still continues," Kapoor said, as quoted by NDTV.

Kapoor, who is scheduled to retire on October 31, made the remarks while addressing personnel at the ITBP's Central Training College in Alwar, Rajasthan.

Shaurya commandos deployed amid border face-offs

The ITBP chief said the force had raised a specialised combat team called the Shaurya commandos, which had demonstrated its capabilities during confrontations with Chinese troops.

The force is also strengthening its combat preparedness and modernisation efforts, with a greater focus on drone technology and training for potential high-intensity confrontations.

According to media reports, the ITBP has established drone platoons in its border units and developed a new training programme called the 'Strike' course to improve personnel's ability to respond to situations similar to the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.

Face-offs reported near Taksing

The latest remarks come amid reports of continued tensions in parts of Arunachal Pradesh along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto boundary between India and China.

Reports have pointed to a stand-off in the Asaphila area near Taksing, in Arunachal Pradesh's Upper Subansiri district, as well as face-to-face encounters during routine patrolling near Maja.

The developments follow a Corps Commander-level meeting between Indian and Chinese military officials on September 6 at the Wacha-Damai Border Personnel Meeting Point in Arunachal Pradesh. The meeting marked a significant step in military-level engagement in the eastern sector, where such talks have traditionally been less frequent than in eastern Ladakh.

India and China have continued diplomatic and military engagement to address outstanding border issues and maintain peace along the LAC.

CDS had described LAC situation as stable

Kapoor's remarks come less than a month after Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani described the situation along the LAC as stable.

Speaking at the NDTV Defence Summit on September 27, Subramani said ground-level contacts between the two sides were continuing and Border Personnel Meetings were being held periodically.

"The situation on the border is at the moment quite stable, and I don't think there's any cause for concern," he said.

The latest comments from the ITBP chief, however, indicate that face-offs continue at several locations in Arunachal Pradesh, underscoring the challenges of maintaining stability along the disputed frontier.
