European Union mourns loss of lives in UP train mishap

Brussels, Nov 21 (IBNS): Th European Union on Sunday mourned the loss of lives in the train mishap that killed over 120 people in Kanpur city of Uttar Pradesh.

"We express our sincere condolences to the government of India and to the families and friends of the victims of today's derailment of the passenger train in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, which has caused the loss of many lives and hundreds of seriously injured. We wish a speedy recovery to all passengers injured in the accident," the European Union said in a statement.

"The European Union stands by the authorities and the people of India in dealing with this tragedy," it said.

The death toll in the train mishap which occurred on Sunday close to the Kanpur city in Uttar Pradesh has crossed 120, media reports said.

The Indore-Patna Express train jumped the tracks and left 200 others injured.

Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday visited the accident site.

The incident took place around 3 am close to Kanpur city at a place called Pukhrayan on Sunday.

Both Indian Army and the National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel have been deployed in the area to carry out the rescue operations.

The train, carrying more than 500 passengers, jumped tracks when most passengers were sleeping.
