New Delhi, Sept 3 (IBNS): United Nations Environment Programme Executive Director Erik Solheim congratulated Hardeep Puri as he took oath as a minister in the Indian government.

Solheim called former diplomat Puri and old friend.

"Warm congrats to my old friend Hardeep Singh Puri, sworn in as minister today. Urban development so important in rapidly rising India!," Solheim tweeted.

During Sunday's Cabinet reshuffle, Puri was allocated Housing and Urban Affairs.

During his career, Puri had served as the Permanent Representative at the UN.

He joined the BJP before the Lok Sabha polls in 2014.
