Draft NRC in Assam likely to be published by July 31, 2018
Guwahati, Nov 17 (IBNS) : The draft publication of the updation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam is likely to be deferred till the second half of the next year as the Register General of India (RGI) on Thursday submitted an interlocutory petition before the Supreme Court stating that the entire preparation and publication will be completed on or before July 31, 2018.
The apex court will hear the case on November 22..
Earlier, the Assam government had announced that the draft NRC would be released by December 31, 2017.
RGI Shailesh has submitted the petition to the top court seeking rescheduling of the timeline after NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela recently sent a letter to the Union Home Ministry and the RGI that it would not be possible to release the draft NRC by December 31, 2017 as over 1.21 crore documents are still to be verified.
The RGI has also appealed to the apex court for some modifications in the NRC.
Recently, the NRC coordinator submitted the status report before the Supreme Court and stated that out of 3.21 crore applications, around 2 crore have been verified so far.
Apart from this, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) also submitted a report to the Union Home Ministry that a law and order situation may be created in Assam in the wake of the draft NRC publication.
Meanwhile, All Assam Students Union (AASU) has accused both BJP-led centre and state governments that the government has derailed the entire process only because of Hindu Bangladeshi people.
"BJP wants to provide citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshi people and the citizenship bill, 2016 is likely to be brought in the next parliament session. So they delayed the entire process for their own business," general secretary of the student body Lurinjyoti Gogoi said.
The top AASU leader said that Assam will no longer take the burden of huge number of foreigners.
Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) said the centre and the state governments have hatched a conspiracy against the indigenous people of Assam by delaying the NRC process.
