Demonetisation: Bengal to observe 12-hour strike tomorrow, protest rallies to hit Kolkata streets

Kolkata, Nov 27 (IBNS): Protesting Central government's move of scrapping 500 and 1000 rupees notes, 18 Left parties have been called for a 12-hour general strike in West Bengal, which will be observed on Monday.

Besides the strike, Left parties will be holding a rally from Moulali to Mullick Bazar in Kolkata as a part of 'Aakrosh Day' against demonetisation.

West Bengals's leading opposition party Congress, which has decided not to support Lefts' strike, will host a protest march on Monday afternoon on the same issue from its state headquarter, Bidhan Bhaban, to Park Circus in the city.

Meanwhile, state's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is opposing the strike, will be organizing a protest march in the city against the Modi-government's demonetisation on Monday.

Starting from College Square, the rally, which will be led by party's supremo and state's Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, will conclude in Kolkata's downtown Esplanade area.

To foil the general strike, West Bengal government has taken several steps, including huge security personnel deployment at important points, extra arrangements of state-run buses and issuance of compulsory attendance order for government employees.
