Cyclone Komen makes landfall in Bangladesh, WB, Odisha on high alert
New Delhi, July 30 (IBNS): Cyclone Komen hit the Bangladesh coast on Thursday evening, which is expected to bring with it heavy rainfall in the Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The Government on Thursday issued a high alert of heavy rains expected to lash the southern West Bengal due to a cyclone storm Komen.
East and Southeast of Kolkata is also expected to receive heavy rainfall.
"The deep depression over northeast Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards during past 9 hrs, intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Komen’ and lay centred at 0530 hrs IST of today, the 30 July 2015 near latitude 21.70N and longitude 91.20E, 95 km south-southwest of Chittagong (41977) and 300 km east-southeast of Kolkata( 42907)," an IMD statement said.
After landfall, the cyclone would move west-northwestwards and weaken gradually.
The IMD forecast rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy at isolated places like the Gangetic West Bengal on Thursday and Friday.
There would be rains at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the northeastern states of Mizoram, Tripura and Assam till Friday. Jharkhand will also witness heavy to very heavy rains on Friday and on August 1.
Rainfall would also occur at most places at isolated places over Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Saurashtra, Kutch & Diu on Thursday and Friday.

Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph would prevail along and off West Bengal and north Odisha coasts during next 48 hours.

Gujarat and Odisha have already been lashed with heavy rainfalls.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off West Bengal as well as north Odisha coasts during the same period.
"Rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places would occur over Odisha on 30 and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls on 31 July & 01 August," the IMD statement said.
