Congress expels Vasan, labels him "opportunist"

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IBNS): Congress party expelled its leader GK Vasan on Monday evening, hours after the latter quit party and announced to float his new political outfit, media reported.

Giving a blow to the Congess party in Tamil Nadu, GK Vasan on Monday morning declared to split away with the party.

Vasan was unhappy with the way Congress central leadership was handling the party in the southern state.

While addressing a press conference, former Union Minister expressed his anxiousness about Congress’ future in the state.

"I am deeply worried about Congress in Tamil Nadu," Vasan was quoted by media as saying. “We want to give Tamil Nadu a political alternative,” he added.

“We were not satisfied with the system given by the national party and so we took this decision,” Vasan said while clarifying his decision to quit party. 49-year-old Vasan also expressed his desire to re-launch Tamil Maanila Congress, the party founded by his deceased father GK Moopanar in 1996.

Reacting to Vasan’s barbs, Congress leader Mukul Wasnik told media that Congress party does not depend on individuals. “No reflection on central leadership but on an individual. No split in party in Tamil Nadu, majority of members with us.”

Another Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has reportedly attacked Vasan by terming him “opportunist”. “He seems to be a very opportunist leader,” Dikshit was quoted by NDTV.
