Congress about to make clean sweep in Rajasthan by-elections, TMC maintains hold in Bengal

Jaipur/Kolkata, Feb 1 (IBNS) : A resurgent Congress on Thursday poised for a clean sweep in Rajasthan by-polls, dealing a body blow to the ruling BJP,  while the Trinamool Congress maintained its stranglehold winning two seats in West Bengal.

According to reports, the Congress won the Mandalagarh Assembly and  Alwar Lok Sabha seats and it was  on the verge of  winning the  Ajmer  Parliamentary seat.

In West Bengal, the ruling TMC wrested the Noapara Assembly seat and retained the Uluberia Lok Sabh seat with huge margins. In both the places BJP finished third leaving Marxists in third spot.

"Well done Rajasthan Congress! Proud of each and every one of you. This is a rejection of the BJP by the people of Rajasthan," tweeted Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

By-polls were called after the death of BJP lawmakers in the three seats.

"We are going to study the reasons, but bypolls don't reflect the full picture," said BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya.

In Mandalgarh Assembly constituency, the Congress won by nearly 13,000 votes while its candidate in Alwar LS constituency recorded a victory by more than 1.56 lakh votes. The party maintains an unassailable lead in Ajmer Lok Sabha constituencies.

Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Vasundhare Raje on moral grounds. Addressing a press conference he said: "After failing to appease voters over religion, the BJP tried polarising them over caste...It is a victory of people, party workers and all leaders."
