Assam: Over 1700 women, minor girls killed in rape, witch hunting, dowry since 2006

Guwahatia, Apr 2 (IBNS): A shocking data has been revealed by the Assam government that, more than 1700 women and minor girls were killed in cases related to rape, witch hunting, dowry in the state in past 11 years.

Replying a written query by Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) MLA Kamali Basumutary, Assam Transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary on Monday said in the Assam assembly on behalf of Home department that, more than 1700 women and minor girls were killed in cases related to rape, witch hunting, dowry in the state since 2006.

Upto March 2018, a total of 1773 women and minor girls were died in these cases.

Out of the total deaths, dowry related deaths accounted for 1606, 53 women were raped and murdered, 34 minor girls were raped and murdered during the period.

On the other hand, 80 women were victims of witch hunting.

The Assam minister further said that, Karimganj, Barpeta and Nagaon districts are among the districts counted high number of dowry related deaths.
