Assam: IT raid unearths 28 fake accounts in Axis Bank

Guwahati, Dec 16 (IBNS): The Income Tax Department on Friday unearthed several fake bank accounts where crore of rupees were deposited by coal traders post demonetisation in Assam's Bongaigaon district.

A top IT official said that the IT department found 28 fake bank accounts which were opened at Bongaigaon branch of Axis Bank.

Based on information from sources, an IT team launched operation in the Lower Assam district and unearthed the fake accounts which were opened by some coal traders in the name of some labourers.

“We have collected the documents of the fake accounts from the concerned bank branch,” the official said.

Several crore rupees of banned notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 were deposited by coal traders in the fake accounts following demonetization.

The IT official said that the investigation is going on.

Meanwhile, Assam Police have recovered Rs 53 lakhs of currency notes from various locations in the state in past 24 hours.

The police seized Rs 29.58 lakhs of currency notes including Rs 28 lakhs in new currency denominations of Rs 2000 and Rs 500 from Guwahati on Dec 15.
