Guwahati, Mar 14 (IBNS): The Assam government will constitute a committee consisting of representatives of six communities to facilitate liaison between them and the government to expedite the process of according ST status to these communities.

Holding a meeting with the representatives of six communities at Assam Legislative Assembly premises in Guwahati on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while mooting the idea for a committee said that a body consisting of the representatives of the six communities would ensure seamless communication between the demanding communities, both Assam and Central government.

Acknowledging the necessity of granting ST Status, Sonowal assured the visiting representatives to take the matter immediately to New Delhi for appropriate intervention of the Centre.

The Assam CM also reiterated his government’s commitment to act as a catalyst to ensure granting of ST Status to Moran, Muttock, Koch Raj Bongshi, Tai Ahom, Sootea and Tea Tribes.

He also assured the representatives that the government has accorded top-most importance to bring the demand of the six communities in its agenda of priorities.

“Close on the heels of earlier stand for endorsing demands of the six communities for ST status, Government is committed to push the demand for early disposal of the issue,” Sonowal said.
