Arunachal Pradesh : Ahead of floor test Nabam Tuki resigns, Pema Khandu new leader of Congress Legislature Party

New Delhi, July 16 (IBNS) In a dramatic turn of event, Nabam Tuki on Saturday resigned as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party in Arunachal Pradesh to make room for Pema Khandu ahead of floor test on Saturday.

Reports said even as a Supreme Court verdict breathed life into the Congress in Arunachal Pradesh to put it back to power, Tuki, the Chief Minister, had to resign to ensure the support of 20 rebel legislators who had sent feelers to come back to the party fold provided there is a change in leadership.

If these rebel lawmakers support the Congress, the party strength  would increase to 35 in the 60-member Assembly to achieve  a comfortable majority.

According to reports, Tuki himself offered to step down and proposed the name of his successor at a Legislature Party meeting held in the morning.

The Congress move came only few hours after Tuki on Friday afternoon had requested the Governor for 10 days to take the floor test.

The Governor's directive for a floor test came a day after the Supreme Court, in a historic verdict on Wednesday,  restored Tuki as Chief Minister, declaring as "illegal" the imposition of  President's rule in the state in  January.

Tuki's Government was thrown out of power after the Congress rebel, backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), staged a coup.
