WhatsApp just made calling easier: You can now make video calls without downloading any app
Meta-owned WhatsApp on Tuesday announced a new feature that allows users to make and receive audio and video calls directly from their web browsers, eliminating the need to download a desktop application.
Announcing the update in a blog post, the messaging platform said users can now place and receive both one-on-one and group audio and video calls through WhatsApp Web.
"You can now make and receive audio and video calls, both one-on-one and group, directly from WhatsApp Web. No app download required," the company said.
According to WhatsApp, the feature is designed for users who rely on shared computers, work laptops that restrict software downloads, or those who simply prefer using a web browser.
"Whether you're a college student on a shared computer, using a work laptop that doesn't allow app downloads, or simply prefer your browser, you can jump on a call without leaving the browser you're already on," the company said.
WhatsApp Web users will also have access to several existing calling features available on other devices, including screen sharing, emoji reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab that displays call history and favourite contacts.
The company said all web-based calls will continue to be protected by end-to-end encryption, with no time limits or additional charges.
New Calling Features
Call Transfer: Users can now seamlessly transfer an active group call between devices without disconnecting. For example, a call started on a smartphone or tablet can be moved to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app for a larger-screen experience, and vice versa.
Waiting Room: WhatsApp has introduced a Waiting Room feature for group calls, giving hosts greater control over who joins and when. When creating a call link, users can enable the "Require approval to join" option, allowing participants to wait for approval before entering the call.
QuickHD: The company said it has enhanced video quality at the start of calls through QuickHD, enabling users to experience high-definition video within the first few seconds of connecting.
Noise Suppression: WhatsApp has also introduced a noise suppression feature that reduces background noise to improve voice clarity, even in loud or busy environments. Users can enable or disable the feature at any time through the in-call settings.
WhatsApp said the new browser-based calling capability and the additional calling features are being rolled out gradually and will be available to all users in the coming weeks.
