Perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause, is traditionally experienced by women in their 40s but in the present time, the stage often sets in prematurely.
Perimenopause occurs when the ovaries begin to produce less estrogen and progesterone, the key hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle.
Hormone levels fluctuate unpredictably, leading to irregular cycles and other symptoms.
Here are the causes of premature perimenopause
1. Soaring stress levels
Chronic stress increases cortisol, which can suppress reproductive hormones like estrogen and progesterone.
2. Unhealthy lifestyle
- Poor diet (low in healthy fats, iron, and essential nutrients)
- Excess caffeine, alcohol, or processed foods
- Smoking or vaping — accelerates ovarian follicle loss
3. Sleep deprivation
Irregular sleep cycles disrupt melatonin and circadian rhythm, which are linked to reproductive hormone timing.
4. Environmental and chemical exposure
Frequent contact with endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) — found in plastics, cosmetics, pesticides, and processed food packaging — can block natural hormones.
5. Medical causes
Chemotherapy or radiation treatment, hysterectomy and autoimmune diseases attacking ovarian tissue.
6. Rapid weight changes
Sudden weight loss or obesity alters insulin and leptin levels, which interact with estrogen production.
7. Genetic factors
A woman sometimes experiences premature perimenopause if her mother or grandmother experienced it.
