Who is Pia Dandiya? Indian-origin Democrat wins US House election from Florida

Indian-origin Democrat Pia Dandiya defeated Republican candidate Casey Askar in Florida's 22nd Congressional District, securing a seat in the US House of Representatives.

Florida's 22nd Congressional District is significant as it was created following the redrawing of the state's electoral map.

The district includes communities such as Weston and Coral Springs and stretches west across the Everglades to Marco Island, NBC Miami reported.

According to the report, Dandiya will represent a geographically and demographically diverse group of communities across South Florida in the House of Representatives.

Who is Pia Dandiya?

Born to Indian parents, Pia Dandiya is a political newcomer who was raised in Palm Beach County, Florida.

Before entering electoral politics, she worked as a middle and high school teacher.

At the age of 28, Dandiya became the founding principal of a high school, making her one of the youngest high school principals in the country.

After serving as a school principal, she was selected as a White House Fellow, where she worked with the Domestic Policy Council and the Department of Education under both Democratic and Republican administrations.

In her campaign statement, Dandiya outlined her reasons for entering the congressional race, saying: "I am running for Congress to fight for a future worthy of my students and my son. I’m also born of a deep belief that we need a new generation of leaders in Congress – who will roll up their sleeves, legislate for the future and get to work.

"In Congress, I will put the American people first by addressing the affordability crisis head-on. I am certain elected leadership shouldn’t be about headlines or political fights – it should be about you."
