‘We just took back Texas’: Who is James Talarico, the Democrat who ended a 38-year drought?

Washington DC/IBNS: Democrat James Talarico on Tuesday won a key Senate race in Texas in the US midterm elections, flipping the seat in the party's favour for the first time since 1988, media reports said.

Talarico defeated Republican candidate Ken Paxton, helping Democrats take control of both chambers of the US Congress amid a nationwide blue wave in the midterms.

In his victory speech, Talarico described the mandate as a triumph of "people's power" and "love" over money, highlighting the role of ordinary voters in his campaign.

"We just took back Texas," Talarico said, adding, "We just proved that all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas."

"We just showed that a politics of division is no match for a politics of love. Power belongs to the people," he said.

"This win is for every underdog who's been counted out and left behind. … This win is for every Texan who's ever wondered if anyone is listening. I heard you. We heard you. And tonight the world hears you," he added.

"Love is the strongest force in the universe. … Hate can't lower our energy bills. Hate can't teach a child to read. Hate can't build a future. But what hate can't do, love can," Talarico said.

Who is James Talarico?

James Talarico is an American Democratic politician, former middle-school teacher and Presbyterian seminarian.

He previously served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives before entering the race for the US Senate.

His victory is particularly significant as it ends a 38-year Democratic drought in Texas Senate elections. The last Democrat to win a US Senate race in the state was Lloyd Bentsen in 1988.

A progressive Christian in American politics

One of the distinctive aspects of Talarico's political identity is his Christian faith.

He describes himself as a progressive Christian and has frequently spoken about the relationship between religious teachings, social justice and public policy.

His political messaging draws on Christian values, including compassion for economically disadvantaged people, equality, social justice and support for working families.

He has also challenged conservative interpretations of Christianity in American politics, arguing that religious values should promote inclusion and protect vulnerable communities.

How did he campaign in the midterms?

Talarico built his campaign around economic populism, political accountability and a message of unity.

Cost of living: He highlighted rising everyday expenses and advocated policies aimed at benefiting ordinary working families.

Criticism of billionaires: He criticised wealthy donors and corporate interests for exercising excessive influence over American politics, arguing that economic policies should prioritise ordinary citizens.

Political unity: He sought to appeal to independent voters, younger voters and Republicans dissatisfied with the Trump administration, presenting a message that transcended political divisions.

Anti-corruption: He made allegations of corruption and ethical controversies surrounding his Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, a central issue in the campaign. Paxton was impeached by the Texas House in 2023 but acquitted by the state Senate.

Healthcare and economic security: He emphasised improving access to healthcare, addressing economic inequality and strengthening financial security for working families.
