UK to ban Lebanon's Hezbollah as terrorist group

| @indiablooms | Feb 25, 2019, at 10:37 pm

London, Feb 25 (UNI): The United Kingdom will ban Lebanese organisation Hezbollah in is entirety, along with Ansar ul Islam and Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), both mainly operating in Africa, as terrorist organisations, the UK Home Office said in a statement on Monday.

A draft order, laid in Parliament today, will proscribe Hizbollah in its entirety alongside Ansaroul Islam and JNIM who operate in the Sahel region in Africa. Subject to Parliament's approval, from Friday when the order comes into effect, being a member, or inviting support for Hizbollah, Ansaroul Islam and JNIM will be a criminal offence, carrying a sentence of up to 10 years' imprisonment," the statement read.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid said he was no longer able to distinguish between the already banned military wing of Hezbollah and its political wing and had thus decided to ban the group in is entirety, since it not only destabilized the "fragile" situation in the Middle East but jeopardized UK security as well.

"By proscribing Hizbollah in all its forms, the government is sending a clear signal that its destabilising activities in the region are totally unacceptable and detrimental to the UK's national security. This does not change our ongoing commitment to Lebanon, with whom we have a broad and strong relationship," Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said, as quoted in the statement.

A total of 74 international terrorist organizations are currently included in London's ban-list.
