Trump pauses military strikes on Iranian power plants after 'constructive conversations'

US President Donald Trump has announced a temporary halt to planned military strikes targeting Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure, citing progress in recent diplomatic engagements.

In a statement shared on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Washington had conducted “very good and productive” discussions with Tehran over the past two days.

He described the exchanges as “in-depth, detailed, and constructive”, suggesting a shift from confrontation towards dialogue.

Five-day pause

Trump said he had directed the Department of Defence to suspend “any and all military strikes” for a five-day period.

He indicated that the pause would depend on continued progress in negotiations.

The US leader emphasised that discussions with Iran would continue throughout the week.

His remarks point to a potential diplomatic opening at a time when regional tensions remain elevated, and concerns over energy security persist.

Shift from ultimatum to engagement

The decision marks a notable change in tone following Trump’s recent hardline stance on Iran.

Just days earlier, he had issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding that Tehran fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.

Trump had warned that failure to comply would trigger US strikes on Iran’s power infrastructure, stating Washington would “obliterate” key facilities if the strait remained disrupted.

The ultimatum had signalled a sharp escalation in the ongoing standoff, raising fears of a broader conflict in West Asia.

Diplomatic window amid rising tensions

Despite the earlier threats, Trump’s latest statement suggests a recalibration of strategy.

He had also hinted at the possibility of “winding down” hostilities shortly before issuing the ultimatum, reflecting mixed signals in Washington’s approach.

The current pause in military action offers a narrow window for diplomacy, even as uncertainty continues to surround the situation.
