At least seven people were killed in a shooting at a school in northern British Columbia, Canada, on Tuesday, according to media reports.

Authorities said the suspected shooter was among the deceased. Two additional bodies were recovered from a residence linked to the incident.

At least 25 people are currently receiving treatment at a local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries. Two victims were airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries, while a third victim died while being transported for medical care.

The incident prompted a community-wide lockdown during the afternoon.

RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd, North District Commander, told The Globe and Mail on Tuesday night that the situation was “rapidly evolving and dynamic.” He credited first responders, school staff, and community members for playing a critical role in the response.

“Our thoughts are with the families, loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. This has been an incredibly difficult and emotional day for our community, and we are grateful for the cooperation shown as officers continue their work to advance the investigation,” Floyd said.

In a statement, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that six individuals, excluding the suspect, were found deceased inside the school.

“Two victims have been airlifted to hospital with serious or life-threatening injuries,” police said. “A third victim died while being transported to hospital. Approximately 25 others are being assessed and triaged at the local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.”

BC RCMP Major Crime has taken over the investigation and is working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Police said the suspect is believed to have died from a self-inflicted injury.

Reacting to the tragedy, Larry Neufeld, the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Peace River South, wrote on X: “I am closely monitoring the situation in Tumbler Ridge following the tragic and deeply disturbing incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.”
