Baghdad/Xinhua/UNI: A total of three people were killed in separate attacks in the Iraqi provinces of Diyala and Nineveh, security sources said on Wednesday.

In the eastern province of Diyala, a civilian was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the town of Abu Saida, some 90 km northeast of Iraqi capital Baghdad, Ahmed al-Nadawi from the provincial police told Xinhua.

Also in the province, a retired teacher was also killed late on Tuesday night by unidentified gunmen in the town of Mandily, some 160 km northeast of Baghdad, al-Nadawi said, adding that the security forces launched an investigation into the incident.

In Iraq's northern province of Nineveh, gunmen attacked the administrative chief of a village near the town of al-Shoura, some 40 km south of the provincial capital Mosul, Khalil al-Jubouri from Nineveh's provincial police told Xinhua.

The security situation in Iraq was dramatically improved after the Iraqi security forces fully defeated the extremist IS militants across the country late in 2017, but sporadic attacks occurred in the war-ravaged country.
