Melbourne/IBNS: Sameer Pandey, an Indian-origin Councillor, has been elected as the new Lord Mayor of the City of Parramatta Council in Sydney.

The development coincides with the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sydney upon the invitation of his Australian counterpart. Pandey has been a council member since 2017 and became the City's first Deputy Lord Mayor from the Indian subcontinent in 2022, reported PTI.

Pandey's election came after Donna Davis stepped down from the role following her election as the State Member for Parramatta in Australia's New South Wales state.

Expressing his privilege in leading one of Australia's fastest-growing centers, Pandey emphasized the City of Parramatta's significance as the geographical heart of Greater Sydney and a major economic powerhouse.

He also highlighted the vibrant and diverse community of Parramatta and expressed excitement in leading the City as it solidifies its position as Sydney's second central business district and a hub for exciting opportunities, as stated in a press release.

Pandey, who owns a small business and has a background in IT, is committed to meeting the needs of the community and local businesses, while also positioning the City of Parramatta as a smart city, the press release added.
