Pakistan: Violent anti-govt protests rock PoK, 2 dead

At least two people died, and 22 others were injured, after thousands of people demonstrated against the Pakistan government in the Muzaffarabad area in PoK, media reports said on Monday.

Several videos of the violence have now gone viral on the internet.

The demonstration in the region is spearheaded by a group named Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) that vowed to shut down the region to protest what it calls the decades-long denial of fundamental rights.

“Let it be clear once again: we are not running a campaign against any ideology or institution, but for the bona fide rights of our people that have been denied for over seven decades under one or the other pretext,” Shaukat Nawaz Mir, a core member of the action committee, was quoted as saying by Dawn News.

“The lockdown will send a loud and clear message that enough is enough. Either grant the rights or face the wrath of the people," he said.

According to Dawn News, a large convoy of vehicles carrying armed police and paramilitary personnel conducted flag marches in almost all districts of the region on Saturday.

The Pakistani government reportedly restricted the internet in the region.

Recently, 30 civilians died after a Pakistani Air Force dropped Chinese-made LS-6 laser-guided bombs on a remote village in KP.
