Indonesia tsunami: Anak Krakatau volcano seethes, fear of new waves grips people

Jakarta, Dec 24 (IBNS): Amid fears that another tsunami might lash Indonesian beach,  coastal residents near the country's Anak Krakatau volcano have been directed to stay away from beaches, media reports said.

A tsunami triggered by volcanic eruption hit Indonesia's Sunda Strait region on Saturday and left at least 281 people killed.

The mishap left over 1000 people injured.

It is thought that volcanic activity set off undersea landslides which in turn generated the killer waves, reported BBC.

Meanwhile, Anak Krakatau once again erupted on Sunday.

The spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, was quoted as saying by BBC: "Recommendations from [the] Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency are that people should not carry out activities on the beach and stay away from the coast for a while."

Donald Trump expresses sadness over loss of lives:

"Unthinkable devastation from the tsunami disaster in Indonesia. More than two hundred dead and nearly a thousand injured or unaccounted for. We are praying for recovery and healing. America is with you!," Trump tweeted.

UN chief mourns:

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed “deep sadness” at the loss of life, injuries and damages caused by the tsunami that struck the Indonesian coast late Saturday, local time.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Secretary-General Guterres extended his condolences to the families of the victims and to the Government and people of Indonesia, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

“The United Nations stands ready to support the ongoing Government-led rescue and relief efforts,” the statement added.

According to reports, at least 200 people have died and over 850 injured after the devastating tsunami struck the coast in the Sunda Strait of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, with Pandenglang, South Lampung and Serang areas the worst affected.

Roads and highways are also said to have been damaged, and several people are reported to be missing.
