Indian-origin judge found guilty in US, faces up to 10 years in prison

An American jury has found Indian-origin judge KP George guilty on two counts of money laundering, according to media reports.

He now faces a potential prison sentence of between two and 10 years.

Prosecutors and the defence have agreed to begin the sentencing phase on June 16, Fox 26 Houston reported.

George has been taken into custody on a $20,000 bond—$10,000 for each charge—and has surrendered his US passport.

District attorneys told the court that, under the law, George is to be removed from office following his conviction.

However, his official removal will only take effect after sentencing.

A jury convicted George on two felony counts after prosecutors alleged he misappropriated more than $46,000 from his campaign funds, according to ABC 13.

George has been a prominent figure in local politics.

He was reportedly a key representative of the Indian-American community in Texas.

The hearing on the sentencing is likely to be held on June 16.
