France: Security beefed up as Paris gears up for another weekend of protest

Paris, Dec 15 (IBNS): Security officials have arrested several people as Paris is gearing up for a fifth straight week of protest on Saturday.

"Yellow vest" protesters assembled at the Champs-Elysées in Paris to demonstrate against the government.

The movement began five weeks ago, initially against a rise in fuel taxes, but has since spread to take in other issues, including education reforms, reported BBC.

Security has been beefed up across the city to prevent any violence during the demonstration.

Amid weeks of protests in several parts of the nation, including Paris city, France President Emmanuel Macron promised a minimum wage rise and tax concessions on Monday.

The nation witnessed violence in the past four weekends over issues like fuel tax rises and living costs.

In the Paris city, windows were smashed, cars were burned and shops looted by demonstrators.

The anti-government demonstration in Paris had turned violent and police had to teargas protesters on Saturday.
