BNP demands general polls should be held in Bangladesh by December

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the general polls should be held by December.

The BNP leader, representing one of the major political outfits of the South Asian country that had ruled the nation in the past, made the call during a rally titled "Establishing the Political Rights of the Youth", jointly organised by Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, and Swechchhasebak Dal.

The rally was held close to BNP's central office in Dhaka city.

Targeting Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, Tarique was quoted as saying by The Daily Star:  "Excuses are already being made regarding the national elections."

He said, "Even after 10 months, the interim government has not announced an election date."

"Begin preparations to ensure that the national elections are held by December," he said.

"Once again, we stress that the national elections must take place by December," the BNP leader said.

Meanwhile, Yunus has currently left for Japan tour amid continuous pressure on his regime over holding the polls.

Bangladesh witnessed a political change last year when Sheikh Hasina, the longest-serving PM of the nation, fled to India amid severe protests against her government over a job quota row.

Yunus took charge of the interim governmanent after Hasina fled to India.
