Amid war crisis, India keeps oil flowing through Strait of Hormuz: 8 vessels transit amid Iran chokehold

India has continued to maintain steady maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, triggered after the US and Israel carried out strikes on Tehran on February 28.

According to media reports, at least eight Indian-linked vessels have transited the critical chokepoint since the escalation began, ensuring continuity in energy supplies.

The vessels include Shivalik, Nanda Devi, Jag Laadki, Pine Gas, Jag Vasant, BW Tyr, BW Elm and Green Sanvi, helping energy security in India and keeping supplies coming for the common man, The Hindustan Times.

Iran Assures India on Energy Shipments

Amid concerns over disruptions, Iran has reassured India that its energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz will remain secure.

In a post on X, the Embassy of Iran in India said, “Our Indian friends are in safe hands, no worries,” signalling continued cooperation despite heightened regional tensions.

Strategic Importance of the Strait

Iran exercises significant control over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. Nearly 20% of global energy supplies pass through this narrow corridor, making any disruption highly consequential for global markets.

Since the conflict escalated, Iran has tightened maritime movement, allowing limited access primarily to what it describes as “friendly nations,” including India, China, Russia, Iraq, and Pakistan.

So far, eight Indian-linked vessels have successfully exited the strait. These include LPG carriers BW TYR and BW ELM, which together transported around 94,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), underscoring the continued flow of critical energy supplies to India.
