IndiGo to launch direct Gaya-Bangkok flights, boosting Buddhist tourism in Bihar

Bihar is set to receive a major tourism and connectivity boost after the state cabinet approved a proposal allowing IndiGo to operate direct international flights between Gaya and Bangkok for the next 12 months.

The proposal was cleared during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Wednesday.

Officials believe the move will significantly improve international air connectivity and make travel easier for Buddhist pilgrims and tourists visiting the state.

Direct connectivity to strengthen Buddhist tourism

According to the civil aviation department’s proposal, InterGlobe Aviation, which operates IndiGo, was selected on a nomination basis after emerging as the sole bidder for the non-stop international service.

The new route is expected to especially benefit Buddhist tourism, as thousands of travellers from Thailand visit Bodh Gaya every year. The town is considered one of Buddhism’s holiest sites and attracts pilgrims from across Asia.

Officials said the direct air service would reduce travel time and improve convenience for international visitors.

“The commencement of this air service will promote Buddhist tourism and expand tourism-related activities in the state,” the proposal noted.

The government also expects increased tourist footfall to generate employment opportunities for hotels, transport operators and local businesses linked to the tourism sector.

What tourists can explore in Gaya

Apart from its religious significance, Gaya offers a mix of spirituality, history and culture for travellers.

The city’s biggest attraction is the Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment under the sacred Bodhi Tree.

Visitors also flock to the towering Great Buddha Statue, one of India’s tallest Buddha statues, standing nearly 80 feet high.

Other key attractions include the Thai Monastery, known for its striking Thai-style architecture and golden roof, and the Dungeshwari Hills, where Buddha is believed to have meditated before attaining enlightenment.

Food lovers visiting the region can also explore traditional Bihari cuisine, including litti chokha, tilkut and anarsa.

With direct connectivity to Bangkok now approved, tourism officials hope the route will position Gaya as an even more accessible international spiritual destination.
