Chennai/IBNS: The occasional brakes in Chennai Super Kings' run-chase in the 18th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) were provided by debutant Vignesh Puthur, who caught the limelight in Mumbai Indians' lineup where Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya were missing on Sunday.

In four overs, Puthur, a left-arm spinner, picked three wickets for 32 runs.

The spinner dismissed CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (53) Shivam Dube (9) and Deepak Hooda (3) instilling hope in the MI side that traditionally face defeat in the inaugural game.

Puthur's performance was also lauded by former India captain and CSK star batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who patted his shoulder after the yellow brigade pulled off a four-wicket win banking on Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten 65 off 45 balls.

Who is Vignesh Puthur?

Puthur, a 24-year-old chinaman bowler from Kerala's Malappuram, is the son of an autorickshaw driver and a homemaker.

He was bought by Mumbai Indians in the auction for Rs. 30 lakh.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, his career took a different turn after Kerala cricketer Mohammed Sharif suggested Puthur to bowl leg spin.

Puthur represented Kerala in both U-14 and U-19 levels. He currently plays for Alleppey Ripples in the Kerala Cricket League.

He has also played in the Tamil Nadu Premier League.

Puthur, who was sent to South Africa for SA20 League, served as a net bowler for MI Cape Town earlier this week.
