Spain sack head coach Julen Lopetegui ahead of World Cup 2018

Madrid, Jun 13 (IBNS): Just two days ahead of their first match in the FIFA World Cup 2018, Spain have sacked their head coach Julen Lopetegui after the latter was named as the new boss of Spanish football team Real Madrid, media reports said.

Real Madrid made the announcement on Tuesday.

Lopetegui will succeed former French football legend Zinedine Zidane as the Real Madrid head coach.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) has been quoted by BBC as saying the decision to sack Lopetegui was taken because the negotiation occurred "without any information to the RFEF".

Spain sporting director Fernando Hierr will assume the post of head coach for the national side during the world cup in Russia.

Spain will face Portugal in their first match in the world cup on Friday.

The tournament will begin on Thursday.
