Pakistan beat Zimbabwe, register first victory

Brisbane, Mar 1 (IBNS): A heroic 50 by Brendon Taylor could not prevent Zimbabwe from a 20 runs defeat against Pakistan here on Sunday.

Posting 235 runs for the loss of seven wickets on the scorecard, Pakistani bowlers then bowled out Zimbabwe for 215 runs in 49.4 overs.

Elton Chigumbura (35) and Sean Williams  (33) contributed some runs but failed to reach the target.

Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz took four wickets each for Pakistan.

Zimbabwe registered their first win the tournament so far after losing two back-back games earlier.

Despite losing two openers early, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq (73) and Wahab Riaz (54) later posted 235 runs for the loss of seven wickets with the rest of the batsmen failing to contribute .significantly with their willows.


Pakistan received some early blows with both openers Nasir Jamshed
(1) and Ahmed Shehzad (0) departing early with just four runs on the scorecard.

Adding 69 runs in the fourth wicket partnership, Misbah and Umar Akmal (33) stabilized the innings.

Wahab Riaz later hammered 6 boundaries and a six in his unbeaten knock of 54 runs to post more than 200 runs on the scorecard.

Zimbabwe's Tendai Chatara took three wickets against the Asian side.

After the game, Haq said during a post match ceremony: "You can't believe how happy we are, because we would be out of the tournament if we lost this game. "

Pakistan 235 for the loss seven wickets in 50 overs ( M Haq 73, W Riaz 54 no; T Chatara 3- 35)

Zimbabwe 215 all out in 49.4 overs (B Taylor 50; M Irfan 4-30, W Riaz 4-45)
