London, Feb 13 (IBNS): England cricketer Joe Root has been named as the skipper of the English Test squad.

He will succeed Alaister Cook.

Cook announced his decision to step down as the skipper of the English side after his team was defeated 4-0 against India.

Root will be supported by Ben Stokes as England vice-captain.

Colin Graves, Chairman of the ECB, approved the appointments on Sunday, the England and Wales Cricket Board said.

“Joe Root is the perfect choice for England Test captain," Graves was quoted as saying by the website.

"I’m delighted that he has accepted the role and will now help to take the team to the next level," he said.
