India wins third test against 'Lanka by an innings and 171 runs, makes a whitewash of series

Pallekele, Aug 14 (IBNS) : India whitewashed Sri Lanka in the series for an early celebration of the country's independence day as they defeated the islanders by an innings and 171 runs on third day of the third test match at Pallekele.

Sri Lanka, having been forced to follow-on by India, collapsed scoring only 181 runs in the second innings, thanks to some deadly spells by spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and an early spadework by pacer Mohammad Shami.

While Ashwin claimed four wickets for 68, Shami picked up three scalps giving away 32 runs.

Kuldeep Yadav and Umesh Yadav claimed one and two wickets respectively.

After India scored 487 runs in their first innings, the hosts were bundled out for 135 and went for a follow-on.

But barring skipper Dinesh Chandimal (36), wicket keeper Niroshan Dickwella (41) and Angelo Mathews (35), none of the batsmen could put up a semblance of resistance to the Indian bowlers.
