‘Even Maa Durga cannot predict’: Sourav Ganguly on Bengal poll outcome

| @indiablooms | May 02, 2026, at 01:18 pm

Kolkata/IBNS: Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly refrained from predicting the outcome of the West Bengal Assembly elections, saying the contest is too complex even for seasoned politicians to call.

Ganguly Avoids Prediction

Despite most exit polls indicating a victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party, Ganguly said he would wait until May 4, when the results are scheduled to be declared.

‘Even Maa Durga Cannot Predict’

With a touch of humour, the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal remarked, “Even Maa Durga cannot predict the outcome. The results will only be known on Monday when the voting machines are opened.”

He added, “Neither Mamata-di nor Modi-ji can foresee the verdict. So how will I answer this?”

Exit Polls Signal BJP Edge

Most exit polls—barring one—have projected a maiden victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, which has been ruled by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress since 2011.

Today's Chanakya Projection

Among the pollsters, Today's Chanakya has forecast a decisive win for the BJP, projecting around 190 seats for the party, while the TMC is expected to secure close to 100.

The agency also estimated the BJP’s vote share at nearly 48 percent, suggesting a significant shift in voter preference.

Analysts associated with the survey indicated that undecided and floating voters may have tilted decisively towards the BJP, potentially translating into a substantial seat advantage.
