Ahead of Asia Cup, Dream11 quits sponsoring Team India over online gaming law
Mumbai/IBNS: Indian fantasy sports platform Dream11 has quit as the sponsor of the Indian cricket team after the Indian parliament passed a law banning real money-based online games, media reports said.
The Parliament last week passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has ended its partnership with Dream11 that had replaced Byju as Team India sponsor in July 2023.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the Indian cricket board will not enter into any partnership with such an organisation in future.
Dream11 will not be penalised for its decision to exit the contract as per a clause that states a company can pull out if its business is affected by a change in law introduced by the India government.
Founded in 2008, it is India’s first unicorn (startup valued at over $1 billion) in the gaming sector.
Apart from BCCI, it has remained official sponsors of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and several sports leagues.
Team India has been stripped off its sponsorship just a couple of weeks before the commencement of Asia Cup 2025.
Asia Cup 2025 will begin on September 9 and India will play their first match against UAE on 10th of the same month.
