Widespread rigging in Bengal, democracy hijacked: Sitaram Yechury

Kolkata: The Left Front has now joined in the chorus with the BJP to allege widespread rigging in West Bengal elections by the Trinamool Congress during the last phase of polls on Sunday. Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said no efforts were made to stop the hijacking of democracy.

"Massive rigging including in Diamond Harbour, Dum Dum, North Kolkata. There are no central forces, no efforts to stop the highjacking of Democracy. EC cannot merely watch it needs to intervene decisively. It is the people resisting this violence and wresting back their rights," alleged Yechury in a post on Twitter on a day when Bengal witnessed widespread violence in polling.

"The reason advanced for the long-drawn seven phases was “free and fair” polls. This has been the most disappointing overseeing of polls in independent India by the Election Commission," said Yechury.

Earlier, Union Minister and BJP candidate Babul Supriyo on Sunday said that Trinamool Congress 'goons' have attacked  BJP candidates' vehicles in areas like Jadavpur and Diamond Harbour in West Bengal.

BJP candidate Chandra Kumar Bose has claimed that his party workers are being threatened by TMC's  'jihadi' brigade.

Speaking to media, Bose alleged that he was getting calls last night from different booths where BJP workers were threatened by the 'Jihadis' of TMC that if they sit in booths as BJP agents they would be murdered.
